About Us
Many of you know Macalaster Bicknell from the standpoint of association with our sales representatives and the quality of service we have been providing you with for over 85 years. However, do you know where we started and how far we have come in those 85 years? Here is a brief history of the Macalaster Bicknell family.
In 1920, Messrs. Macalaster and Bicknell established at Cambridge, Massachusetts, a shop (known as "The Barn") for research glass blowing. This was the modest beginning of Macalaster Bicknell Co. The service and quality of the craftsmanship of this shop soon became recognized, not only in New England, but also in many parts of the world. This much-needed service fostered the growth of the company from a research lamp shop to a multi-plant operation servicing science in every capacity of the research laboratory.
In 1935, in order to give complete service coverage in New England, we established our first full-scale branch in New Haven, Connecticut.
Then, with the support of our many friends and customers, we found ourselves serving fringed areas of New England and in 1947 we opened our Syracuse, New York branch. This branch prospered and we were then in a position to service New England and the northeastern area of the United States. Expanding further, in 1950, from our New England base we established another fully stocked branch at Millville, New Jersey, which allowed us to service New York City, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and adjacent areas. In addition, in 1950, we expanded our operation at Cambridge to include an industrial department to service the chemical and food-processing industries.
Due to the ever-increasing demand for specialized as well as production glassware, we found it necessary to add additional facilities for this purpose only. This we did in 1957 when we opened our glass factory at Fitzwilliam, New Hampshire. This new location, unlike the other plants of the company, did not stock a line of laboratory equipment and supplies but concentrated solely on glass blowing for research and industry.
In short, that is the history of the Macalaster Bicknell Company. Times have changed, and we are no longer involved with glass blowing. However, we are still dedicated to providing you with the same service and quality products that Messrs. Macalaster and Bicknell established back in 1920.
Trained field representatives, who know and understand laboratory requirements, maintain routine liaison with our customers. Their reason for being is to serve you.
Please call on them for any assistance, which you may need.
Our inside staff is as near as your telephone. Moreover, unlike many other companies, when you call Macalaster Bicknell you will actually speak with a knowledgeable staff member, not a machine!
